Polio has broken out in Uganda.

This was confirmed after the virus was found in two samples taken from two separate sewage plants in Kampala, the capital.

Uganda was declared polio-free in 2006 but has suffered two previous outbreaks of the disease, this being the third.

Africa as a whole was declared polio-free last year, but the virus has been detected in a number of countries since then.

Ugandan authorities said they would be ramping up polio surveillance and would also begin a mass vaccination programme for all children under the age of five from the end of the year.
