Salim Abdool Karim, a former head of the government’s advisory committee on Covid-19, has said that the vaccine to combat the virus should be made mandatory.

Karim was speaking on eNCA. He said that for the ‘public good’ vaccines should be mandated.

Exemptions could be made for people who were opposed to the vaccinations on medical or religious grounds, but those who were exempted should have to undergo a weekly Covid-19 test, Karim said.

Karim did not explain how South Africans would be forced to be vaccinated in practice.

About 14% of South Africans have received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, while just under nine percent are fully vaccinated against the virus.
