The Independent Citizens Movement (ICM) is lobbying former chief justice Mogoeng Mogoeng to run for president in the 2024 general elections.

The ICM comprises a group of pastors and professionals which has registered with the Electoral Commission to contest the 2024 elections. It is fielding Rev Chris Mathebula as its mayoral candidate for Ekurhuleni in the local elections.

The ICM said last week that it had held informal talks with Mogoeng about making himself available after his retirement from the bench.

A video two weeks ago revealed Mogoeng telling an audience that if God wants him to lead the country he will make himself available.

“You must ask God to make it clear to you who he has chosen. Remember I said there [are] about seven or more people who say the Lord has called them to lead this nation, so to get certainty, so that it doesn’t look like anybody is trying to take anything from anybody, let there be clarity,” Mogoeng said in response to a question.

“All I can say is I am ready to do whatever the Lord wants me to do,” Mogoeng said to cheers and applause.

“We are planning on going national in 2024 … but if you go nationally you need a national leader and Mogoeng Mogoeng for us is one of those people … we want to work with, he is not the only one but he fits the profile,” Mojapelo said.

“We said if we ask you to come and be our candidate nationally for president would you accept and he said, ‘Yes, if you come and ask and God wants to me to do it I will accept’.”
