The Ethiopian government has asked the World Health Organisation (WHO) to investigate its chief, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. Addis Ababa said that Tedros, an Ethiopian national, was ‘interfering’ in the country’s affairs.

This came after Tedros had described conditions in the Tigray region of the country as ‘hell’ and claimed the Ethiopian government was preventing aid from being sent to the region.

Ethiopia is in the midst of a civil war between the federal government and Tigrayan rebels. Eritrea, which itself fought a war for independence against the Ethiopian government, is also involved in the conflict.

The Ethiopian government has claimed that it is, in fact, the rebels in Tigray who are blocking aid.

Tedros himself is of Tigrayan heritage.
