Thousands of Indians have burned empty train carriages and blocked railway tracks in what they are claiming is a protest against ‘irregularities’ in the recruitment of railway employees.

Student associations in the Indian state of Bihar have called for the protests to continue.

The violence began after the publication of test results for different job categories, showing some people’s names appearing multiple times across different job lists, leading to some unsuccessful applicants believing that they had been cheated.

Protesters have claimed that the recruitment processes for railway jobs have not been transparent and that some job-seekers had paid bribes to apply for multiple positions at the same time.

The ministry of railways said it was forming a committee to investigate the protesters’ concerns.
