Although Africa has not made a significant contribution to climate change, it is being  disproportionately hit by it. This is the view of President Cyril Ramaphosa, addressing the African Union Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change on Sunday.

‘Africa,’ he said, ‘is experiencing the worst impacts of phenomena associated with global warming, such as droughts, floods and cyclones.’

He added: ‘Climate change impacts are costing African economies between three and five percent of their GDPs. Despite not being responsible for causing climate change, it is Africans who are bearing both the brunt and the cost.’

The developed world would need to support the transition to green energy by the less affluent parts of the world, such as Africa. However, it was unfortunate that the funding was not being made available at the required level.
