Juan Orlando Hernandez, a former Honduran president, has been arrested on drug charges. This followed an extradition request by the American government.

Hernandez, who served as leader of the Central American country from 2014 until last month, has been accused of being part of a drug smuggling ring, which included his younger brother, Tony.

Last year the younger Hernandez was sentenced to life in prison by an American court.

According to the BBC, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said in a statement that Hernandez had ‘engaged in significant corruption by committing or facilitating acts of corruption and narco-trafficking, and using the proceeds of illicit activity to facilitate political campaigns’.

Hernandez claimed that convicted drug traffickers who had implicated him in drug crimes were motivated by revenge, and that their claims of his involvement in corruption and smuggling activities were false.
