The governing Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) has won that country’s election.
With nearly all votes counted, official results show that the party won 51% of the vote, and 124 seats in the 220-member legislature.
The National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (Unita), the MPLA’s long-running rival against whom it fought a bitter civil war, was second, winning 90 seats, a gain of 39 seats. Conversely, the MPLA lost 26 seats.
Three other parties – the Social Renewal Party, the National Front for the Liberation of Angola, and the Humanist Party of Angola, each won two seats.
It is likely that Unita will challenge the results, as pre-election polls had shown it could win a majority.
