Household crime – break-ins and home robberies – have increased by 14% in a year, according to the latest statistics.

Statistics South Africa’s Victims of Crime report has found there were an estimated 1.4 million housebreaking incidents in the 2021/2022 reporting period, and an estimated 205 000 home robberies during the same period.

This represented a 14% increase over the previous reporting period.

The report has also found that crimes experienced by individuals, including hijacking, are on the rise, too.

Statistician-general Risenga Maluleke released the report in Pretoria yesterday.
