One by-election was held on Wednesday in the King Sabata Dalindyebo (Mthatha) municipality in the Eastern Cape.

The ANC easily saw off a challenge from the EFF in the municipality’s Ward 7, with the ANC winning over 70% of the vote. The party had won just below 60% of the vote in last year’s local government election.

The EFF candidate managed a fifth of the vote. The UDM, which had won nearly 20% of the vote in the ward in last year’s poll, could only manage 2.6% of the vote.
