Israel and Lebanon have finalised a deal, brokered by the United States, that demarcates the maritime border between the two countries. The deal has been signed by both sides, despite Lebanon’s refusal to support Israel’s right to exist and despite Lebanon considering itself at war with Israel.

The deal is seen as an important step in de-escalating tensions between the two countries. It reduces the possibility of naval clashes over potential resource finds off the coast.

The Lebanese militia, as well as Hezbollah which is closely aligned with Iran, called the treaty a “very big victory for Lebanon.”
