A South African peacekeeper has been killed in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and another has been wounded.

This was after the helicopter they were travelling in came under fire.

The aircraft was travelling to the city of Goma in the east of the country.

South African troops are part of a UN peacekeeping mission in the country, known as Monusco, after its French acronym. Tensions in the region have been heightened in recent times with rebel groups becoming more active. Some have accused Rwanda of supplying rebel groups in order to stoke tensions in the region but Kigali has denied this.
