The Australian government will remove a number of Chinese-made surveillance cameras which are being used at a number of defence sites.

It is believed that the data from the cameras could be accessed by the Chinese government. Australia is following similar moves by the British and American governments.

The Chinese-made cameras were found in over 200 Australian government buildings.

The cameras were made by two different companies – Dahau and Hikivision.

According to the BBC, Hikivision said the fears were unfounded, while Dahau had not responded to requests for comment.

A Chinese national security law can compel any organisation or citizen to ‘support, assist and co-operate with the state intelligence work,’ according to the BBC.
