The President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, has claimed that Russia is planning to overthrow her government.

She said that the plot would entail protests by the opposition with the aim of overthrowing the ‘constitutional order’.

According to the BBC, Sandu said Russia would use ‘saboteurs with military background, camouflaged in civilian clothes, to undertake violent actions, attacks on state institutions and taking hostages’.

Sandu has been President since 2020, when she won an election running on a pro-European Union ticket.

Moldova is one of Europe’s poorest countries. It gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
