More than 20 people are feared to have lost their lives after two boats carrying migrants sank in the Mediterranean Sea over the weekend.

The two boats, which were carrying about 80 people, sank while attempting to reach Italy.

Four bodies have been found while 23 people are still missing. About 50 people were rescued.

Since the beginning of March seven boats carrying migrants have sunk off the coast of Tunisia, with about 100 people losing their lives.

In recent months Tunisia has overtaken Libya as the most common departure point for migrants attempting to reach Europe.

The Tunisian coast guard said that since the beginning of 2023 about 14 000 people have been apprehended trying to reach Europe by sea.

The craft used are often not seaworthy and are constructed using iron sheets.
