Malaysia’s government has threatened legal consequences for Facebook parent company Meta for allegedly failing to adequately deal with content on its platform that the Malaysian state feels is inappropriate.

This includes issues relating to illegal gambling, identity theft and fraud carried out on Facebook, but also content which is insulting to Malaysia’s traditional rulers, content which the government believes ‘threatens racial stability’, and content which encourages disrespect for rulers.

Malaysia has strict racial laws which advantage the Malay majority and tightly constrain debate in the country. It has preferential racial laws for Malays over Chinese and Indian Malaysians, as well as debate around the nine Malaysian traditional leaders who hold ceremonial power.
