Dr Anthea Jeffery, author and Head of Policy Research at the Institute of Race Relations (IRR), will be the guest speaker at the Free Market Foundation tonight for the first Johannesburg launch of her book, COUNTDOWN TO SOCIALISM – The National Democratic Revolution in South Africa since 1994.
Published byJonathan Ball Publishers, COUNTDOWN TO SOCIALISM seeks to explain why the ANC does not embark on meaningful reform of the South African economy, but doggedly pursues damaging policies. These policies, including the National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme, and expropriation without compensation, are aligned with the governing party’s commitment to the decades-old socialist-inspired National Democratic Revolution (NDR).
Jeffery argues that, despite the Soviet Union’s collapse in 1991, the ANC/SACP alliance still sees the NDR as offering the ‘most direct route’ to socialism in South Africa – and hence as its bedrock strategy.
Jeffery holds law degrees from Wits and the University of Cambridge and has a PhD in law from London University.
She has authored 11 books, including BEE: Helping or Hurting? and People’s War: New Light on the Struggle for South Africa.
She has also written extensively on property rights, land reform, the mining sector, the proposed National Health Insurance (NHI) system, and a growth-focused and non-racial alternative to BEE.
Tonight’s function, with registration starting at 5.30pm, will be at Building 5, Bryanston Gate, 170 Curzon Road, Bryanston. Except for media, there will be a cash-only entrance fee of R50. RSVP here.
There will be a second Joburg launch at Exclusive Books in Rosebank on 2 August at 6pm.
