The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in Gauteng is concerned about the lack of medication at Tembisa Hospital.

Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital has been battling with inadequate stock since January. This includes injections to treat, amongst others, bipolar disorder, high blood pressure and epilepsy.

For Cosatu, the solution to these problems is implementation of the NHI and the creation of state-owned pharmaceutical companies.

‘It is evident that there is clear mismanagement and miscommunication between the hospital procurement and the suppliers. We call for an immediate investigation into the procurement processes in the department and the fitness of the hospital head’.

Tembisa is at the centre of massive corruption allegations, the disclosure of which led to the assassination of Gauteng Health official Babita Deokaran in 2022.
