Voters in Ohio have elected to enshrine abortion rights in the state’s constitution.
Some 56% of voters in a referendum last week supported amending the state’s constitution to codify the right to abortion. It will also guarantee the right to contraception and fertility treatment.
In 2019 the Ohio state legislature passed restrictive abortion legislation, making it near-impossible for women to access abortions in the state.
Ohio is a relatively conservate state, Donald Trump having won in both 2016 and 2020. It also has a Republican governor, with Republicans controlling both of the state’s legislatures. This implies that abortion may not be the partisan issue that it is often perceived as.
