Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, has appointed Gabriel Attal as the country’s Prime Minister. At 34, Attal is the youngest person to ever serve as the country’s Prime Minister.

Attal is a member of Macron’s Renaissance party. He was first elected to the country’s National Assembly in 2017.

He breaks the record of Laurent Fabius, who had been appointed as Prime Minister at the age of 37 in 1984, by Francois Mitterrand.

Attal is the first openly gay person to serve as the country’s Prime Minister.

He replaces Elisabeth Borne, who resigned after less than two years in office.

On social media Macron said: ‘I know I can count on your energy and your commitment to implement the project of revitalisation and regeneration that I announced.’

Attal becomes Prime Minister ahead of elections for the European Parliament in June, which will show whether the right-wing surge in much of the rest of Western Europe is also happening in France.

Attal is now the youngest serving head of state or government in the world, pushing the head of the military junta which currently governs Burkina Faso, Ibrahim Traoré, into second place.
