David Teeger has had the captaincy of the U/19 Proteas taken away.

Teeger, was due to lead South Africa in the U/19 World Cup, which is being hosted in this country and which starts next Friday, but Cricket South Africa (CSA), the sport’s governing body said he would be relieved of the leadership role.

CSA said in a statement that it had taken the captaincy away from Teeger over security concerns, saying it was in the best interests of Teeger and the U/19 team.

Teeger had sparked some controversy last year when at a Jewish achievers’ awards event, he had dedicated an award he was given to Israeli soldiers. A pro-Palestinian organisation approached CSA over the remarks, with the cricketing body launching an inquiry into what Teeger said.

Teeger was cleared of all wrongdoing.
