A controversial auction of Nelson Mandela personal belongings has been postponed pending legal action.

Over 100 of the former president’s personal items were due to be auctioned off by his daughter, Makaziwe Mandela. However, the announcement of the auction has caused some controversy and has seen the South African Heritage Resource Agency (SAHRA) take legal action.

The auction was reportedly postponed after SAHRA had asked the auction house which was due to run the auction of Mandela’s possessions to wait until the court cases surrounding the items be concluded.

The auction of the items, which include Mandela’s ID document, is allegedly being held to raise funds for the creation of a memorial garden in the former president’s birthplace of Qunu in the Eastern Cape, where he is buried.
