The Nigerian state of Lagos has decided to ban Styrofoam and single-use plastic products.

This, according to Tokunbo Wahab, the State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, was meant to counter the damage that was being done by these items clogging up draining systems. This damage happened despite regular cleanup efforts.

The upshot had been flooding, and the incubation of diseases such as cholera.

The banning would  target both production companies and vendors. The ban would be enforced through fines, cleanup cost levies and the closure of premises.

Wahab appealed to people to cooperate with the official measures and boycott these items.
