In the face of a massive shortage of skilled workers, Germany  is desperately looking for South Africans to fill jobs within its top five in-demand fields, according to BusinessTech.

Its economy is also facing significant headwinds. Rising energy costs, high interest rates, and severe labour shortages all contribute to its sluggish performance.

Another issue is that the country’s population is rapidly aging. It is estimated that by 2035, Germany will face a shortage of seven million skilled workers.

In 2022, Germany recruited 202 000 foreign workers – a 190% increase over 2012 – including South Africans.

An estimated 15 000 engineering jobs in Germany need to be filled, while the growth of the IT sector is marked by 137 000 vacancies.

There is also job growth in other technical fields, such as biotechnology, data science and analytics, as well as robotics and automation.
