Scientists believe that there may be an ocean present on a moon of Saturn, Mimas.

Mimas, a small object which has a diameter of about 400km, showed some peculiarities in its orbit and spin. After studying thousands of photos of Mimas, scientists came to the conclusion that the body likely contains an ocean below its icy crust.

Mimas, which resembles the infamous ‘Death Star’ space station from Star Wars because of a large impact crater on its surface, now joins a number of other moons in the solar system which are believed to have oceans present under icy surfaces.

It is believed that Titan and Enceladus, which orbit Saturn, and Europa and Ganymede, which orbit Jupiter, could all have water oceans present underneath their surfaces.

Scientists have speculated that life could emerge in these liquid bodies, with their interest particularly in Europa. The European Space agency launched a probe last year which is expected to reach the Jovian system in the 2030s and will study both Ganymede and Europa, while a mission set to explore Europa is set to be launched by NASA later this year.
