Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been accused of anti-Muslim hate speech.

At an election rally, Modi said that the opposition wanted to distribute wealth to ‘infiltrators’ and ‘those who have many children’. Critics have said that these comments are referring to Indian Muslims.

In recent years Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been accused of discriminating against religious minorities, particularly Muslims. The BJP has denied these claims.

India is currently in election mode, with the first phase of the election taking place on Friday last week. There will be six more phases, with the last taking place on 1 June.

The BJP is widely expected to win again, with Modi likely to be elected to a third term as Prime Minister.
