George Clooney has become the latest person to call for President Joe Biden to stand down as the Democratic Party’s candidate for the US presidential election, due to be held in November.
Actor Clooney, who has been a major donor to the Democrats over the years, has said that Biden should consider stepping down.
Writing in the New York Times this week, Clooney said: “I love Joe Biden. I consider him a friend, and I believe in him… But the one battle he cannot win is the fight against time.”
Clooney said that with Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket the party would lose the presidency, as well as the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Clooney is the latest prominent Democrat to call on Biden to consider making way for someone else.
This week Peter Welch, a Democrat from Vermont, became the first senator from the party to openly call for Biden to step down. This comes after a number of members of the House of Representatives have also called for the President to reconsider his campaign.
Polling in recent weeks has shown that Donald Trump, the Republican Party’s candidate, is starting to build a lead over Biden ahead of November.
