Paul Kagame, the President of Rwanda, has been re-elected in a landslide, according to official results.

Final results show that Kagame won 99.18% of the nearly nine million votes cast.

In the parallel election for the Rwandan legislature, Kagame’s RPF Coalition, made up of his Rwandan Patriotic Front and five other parties, won 37 of the of the 53 directly elected seats.

Kagame’s vote share is his highest yet. In previous elections he has regularly won more than 90% of the vote, but never more than 99%.

A number of candidates had been prevented from running in the presidential race, with the contest being described as unfair by a number of outside observers.

This is Kagame’s fourth term as President. He first become leader of the country in 2000.
