A Japanese startup is developing a prototype autonomous-driving vehicle that is envisaged as being put to work as a taxi.
Tier IV was selected for the task by the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry. The firm – which specialises in autonomous driving technologies – has conducted demonstrations with such vehicles earlier in the year.
The vehicle currently under development is reported to be a box-style vehicle, with room for four to six passengers.
Commercial operations with existing models are scheduled to begin in Tokyo in November. The autonomous vehicles will operate along particular routes, like buses.
