Bobi Wine, the Ugandan singer-turned-politician, has been shot in a confrontation with police in Kampala earlier this week.

Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, ran against President Yoweri Museveni in 2021. He won 35% of the vote against Museveni’s 58%, although the election was criticized, with the US State Department calling it “fundamentally flawed”.

Museveni has been President since 1986.

Wine’s party, the National Unity Platform, said that police had made an attempt on his life and he had been rushed to hospital.

Observers have expressed concern over the possibility that the state would sponsor violence ahead of the next presidential and parliamentary elections, scheduled to be held in 2026.
