Bangladesh has issued an arrest warrant for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled the country following widespread riots in August.

Hasina had governed the country – increasingly autocratically – for 20 years.

Bangladesh’s International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) issued the arrest warrant for her because of alleged “crimes against humanity”. These were allegedly committed during the protests against her government, which saw more than 1,000 Bangladeshis killed.

The riots had initially begun as protests against quotas for government jobs but they soon became general protests against the government.

The BBC reports that arrest warrants have also been issued for nearly 50 other people.

Hasina is believed to have fled to India. Reports indicate that her attempts to seek asylum in other countries have been unsuccessful.

It was Hasina’s government that created the ICT in 2010, to investigate atrocities committed during Bangladesh’s war of independence against Pakistan in the 1970s.
