In a year where incumbent parties around the world have been voted out, Mauritius has joined the trend, with its governing party being wiped out in an election held over the weekend.

The opposition Alliance for Change won 60 of Mauritius’s 68 parliamentary seats. The Alliance Lepep won only two seats, down from the 42 it had managed after the 2019 election.

Two other parties – the Rodrigues People’s Organisation and Alliance Liberation – also won two seats each.

Navin Ramgoolam, the Alliance for Change’s leader, will now have a third term as the Prime Minister of Mauritius, replacing Pravind Jugnauth.

The election comes shortly after Mauritius and the United Kingdom came to an agreement over the status of the Chagos Islands, with the islands to come under Mauritian sovereignty.
