Tomiko Itooka, who was recognised by Guinness World Records as the oldest person in the world, has died at the age of 116.

She died in a nursing home in Ashiya in Japan.

Itooka was born in 1908.

She was only recognised as the world’s oldest person for less than a year, after the previous oldest person alive, Spaniard Maria Branyas Morera, died in August last year.

A Brazilian nun, Inah Canabarro Lucas, who was born only a few weeks after Itooka, is now believed to be the world’s oldest person.
