A Sudanese paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has been accused of committing genocide in that country’s ongoing civil war.

The RSF has been engaged in a civil war with the Sudanese army since 2023.

Anthony Blinken, the American Secretary of State, said that the RSF had committed sexual violence and had murdered a large number of civilians, and that he believed the organisation was committing genocide.

Blinken also said that neither the RSF nor the Sudanese military were fit to govern the country.

The US will sanction the RSF’s leader, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, as well as members of his family. They will not be allowed to visit the US and any assets they have in that country will be frozen.

Some estimates say that 150 000 people have been killed in the conflict with up to half the country’s population facing the threat of starvation.
