Former US Vice-President Mike Pence warned against the threat posed by China to Taiwan, and called for the US to maintain support of the island democracy.

He was speaking during a visit to Taiwan.

He remarked that a withdrawal of US commitment to Taiwan would be dangerous for Taiwan and the entire region.

With Taiwan under Chinese control and without a credible US deterrent, it is likely that other countries would seek to guarantee their own security, which would “likely spark a new nuclear arms race” in the Asia-Pacific region.

He added: “Ultimately nations would feel they have no choice but to develop their own nuclear arsenal.”

Pence said that the US and its allies needed to “renew our commitment” to Taiwan’s defence and resilience.

“In addition to military support, there’s no better time for the incoming administration to begin negotiations on a free trade agreement with Taiwan.”
