The M23 rebel group, which recently took a major city, Goma, in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), have vowed to take their fight all the way to the capital, Kinshasa.
It said that its aim was to topple the government of DRC president, Felix Tshisekedi.
The rebels are also reportedly marching on Bukavu, the second-biggest city in the region.
After the fall of Goma Tshisekedi said: “Be sure of one thing: the Democratic Republic of Congo will not let itself be humiliated or crushed. We will fight and we will triumph.”
Analysts believe that any attempt by M23 to reach Kinshasa will be difficult as the capital is nearly 3,000 km away from M23’s main theatre of operations. However, in 1997 rebels from the east of the country did make it to Kinshasa and toppled long-serving dictator, Mobutu Sese Seko.
