Following the fall of Goma in the eastern DRC to M23 rebels last week, prisoners broke out of the city’s main prison.

According to a report from the United Nations, during the jailbreak male prisoners physically and sexually assaulted their female counterparts. Many of them were then burnt alive as escapees set fire to the prison.

It is believed that at least 165 women were assaulted by the male prisoners, with most of them dying after the prison was set on fire.

Goma is a major city in the eastern DRC and was captured by the Rwandan-backed rebel group, M23.

A short ceasefire was called, but it is believed that M23 is once again on the march, with its next target being another large town in the region, Bukavu.
