The biggest opposition party in Hong Kong has said that it’s planning to disband.
The Democratic Party, formed 31 years ago, said that members will vote on a final decision soon.
The party has found it increasingly difficult to survive since harsher crackdowns on political activity in Hong Kong, especially since the 2019 protests.
In addition, a 2021 law said only those loyal to Beijing could serve as lawmakers in Hong Kong, further weakening the party. This effectively barred the Democratic Party from serving as legislators.
The Democratic Party’s chairman, Lo Kin-hei, was quoted as saying: “Developing democracy in Hong Kong is always difficult, and it’s especially difficult in the past few years.”
