Andrzej Duda, the President of Poland, has reiterated his call for US nuclear weapons to be stationed on Polish soil.
Speaking to the BBC, Duda said that Russia posed a “clear and present danger” to Poland, and that he believed Russia was as aggressive as the Soviet Union.
He said that Russia was also moving nuclear weapons to Belarus and the placing of nuclear weapons on Polish soil would be a defensive deterrent, not a move of aggression.
Said Duda: “This defensive tactic is a vital response to Russia’s behaviour, relocating nuclear weapons in the NATO area. Poland is ready to host this nuclear weapon.”
Duda also welcomed the proposal by the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, to extend the French nuclear umbrella to include Poland.
Poland already spends about 5% of its national budget on defence: more than any other NATO member including the US.
