Angola has denied entry into the country for a number of prominent African politicians who were scheduled to attend a conference hosted by Angola’s main opposition party, Unita.
Unita said it had invited several prominent African politicians to attend a summit on democracy. Those invited included Mozambique’s Venancio Mondlane, former Botswana president Ian Khama, and Tundu Lissu, a prominent opposition figure in Tanzania.
The Angolan migration and immigration service claimed that the three men, along with other attendees, were blocked from entering the country because of visa issues. However, many analysts do not believe this is the true reason. It had more to do with Angola stifling dissent in the country.
