Mark Carney, the new Canadian Prime Minister, has called a snap election for the end of April.

Carney, who recently succeeded Justin Trudeau as leader of the Canadian Liberal Party and Canadian Prime Minister, will see his biggest rival to be Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the Canadian Conservative Party.

In the last few months, the Conservatives had a large lead in the polls, but more recently the lead has narrowed, and the race is now neck-and-neck.

Over the weekend, Carney said he needed a strong mandate from Canadian voters to face the threat posed by new American President, Donald Trump. He said: “We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of President Trump’s unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty.”

In his short time in office so far, Carney has met with the leaders of a number of Canada’s allies, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Emmanuel Macron, the French president.

The main electoral issues are likely to be the continuing tensions with the United States, as well as immigration and the high cost of living.

Latest polls have the Liberals polling at 39%, while the Conservatives are sitting at 37%.

Other parties which are likely to win seats are the Green Party, the left-wing New Democratic Party, and the Bloc Quebecois, a regionalist party based in Quebec.
