The President of South Korea, Yoon Suk-leol, has been removed from office, after the country’s constitutional court confirmed his impeachment.
He was impeached in 2024 after he attempted to declare martial law, saying that the country had been infiltrated by “communists”. The declaration only lasted a few days, with widespread protests around the country.
He was also accused of deliberately ordering drones to be flown over North Korea, in an attempt to start a war with South Korea’s estranged neighbour.
Since December, Yoon had continued serving as President but had been stripped of all his powers.
In a statement after the verdict was announced, Yoon said he was “truly sorry”, and it had been a “great honour” to serve as President.
The country will hold a snap Presidential election within the next sixty days.
