Chinese people who are on the lighter side have been urged to stay indoors if they live in the Hebei region around capital Beijing this weekend because they run the risk of being blown away in winds predicted to reach speeds as high as 150km/h.

According to the BBC, workers were told to hurry home, classes at schools were suspended and outdoor events cancelled as northern China braced itself for extreme winds.

Some state media outlets have warned that people weighing less than 50kg may be “easily blown away”.

High winds were predicted for Beijing, Tianjin and other parts of Hebei, as a cold vortex moved southeast from Mongolia.

The BBC reports that while strong winds sweeping from Mongolia are not uncommon, especially at this time of the year, the impending winds are expected to be stronger than anything the area has seen in years.
