City Press reports that the ANC’s decision to cancel the special National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting that was likely to expel the DA from the GNU has caused ructions among NEC members who want the DA expelled.
The NEC meeting, which was to be held today, and the prospect of having further talks with the DA, left some members of the NEC angry, believing that some are working against the party mandate.
The ANC has decided to “reset” the GNU and meet with all members, which included meeting with the DA on Saturday.
Last week, the ANC scrambled to stabilise the GNU by holding a series of meetings with political parties both inside and outside the coalition.
After the meeting Helen Zille, Federal Council chair of the DA, described the talks as constructive. She stated that: “Both sides spoke respectfully yet frankly about the need to resolve the impasse over the budget and enhance cooperation between the two parties in the context of the government of national unity.”
Zille said that the proposed VAT hike was “unaffordable in the absence of meaningful reforms”.
