Jordan has banned the Islamic organisation, the Muslim Brotherhood, saying that organisation was planning terror attacks.

It said that all the Muslim Brotherhood’s offices would be closed, and its assets confiscated.

The Brotherhood has denied the plots.

In Jordan the organisation also has a political arm, the Islamic Action Front (IAF), which is the largest opposition party in the Jordanian parliament. Its headquarters were also reportedly raided by police.

The IAF’s secretary-general, Wael Saqqa, was quoted as saying: “We always declare that we are committed to order, the law, and the provisions of the constitution,” and that it was an independent organisation, unaffiliated with any other body.

Jordanian intelligence services said that they had arrested 16 people who were suspected of plotting attacks and planning the training of terrorists.

The Muslim Brotherhood was founded in Egypt almost a century ago and has branches around the world. Its aim is to establish a state ruled by Shariah law.

It was the governing party in Egypt for a short time over a decade ago but was subsequently banned in that country.
