The Congolese government and rebels operating in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have agreed to a Qatar-brokered truce.

The DRC and M23 rebels said that fighting would be halted while peace talks worked to their conclusion.

The M23 rebels have long operated in the eastern DRC, and it is an open secret that they are backed by the Rwandan government. The group’s latest offensive has seen about 7,000 people killed since January.

This week the DRC government and M23 said the talks had been “frank and constructive” according to the BBC.

In addition, in a surprise meeting DRC President, Felix Tshisekedi and his Rwandan counterpart, Paul Kagame, also met in the Qatari capital, Doha, and said they were committed to an “unconditional” ceasefire in the region.
