A beekeeper living in the US has been arrested for his part in the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

Faustin Nsabumukunzi, 65, has been accused of committing “heinous acts of violence abroad” by the US Justice Department.

He is also being charged with alleged visa and naturalisation fraud after he moved to the US in 2003.

About 800,000 people, mainly from the Tutsi ethnic group, were killed in 100 days during the country’s genocide.

Nsabumukunzi, who was arrested in Bridgehampton, New York, is accused of helping to set up roadblocks to detain Tutsis and he is also accused of participating in murdering them.

He had already been convicted in absentia in Rwanda and sentenced to life in prison.

If found guilty in the United States he could face up to thirty years behind bars.
