A letter written by a passenger who survived the sinking of the Titanic has been auctioned for £300,000.

The letter was written by Colonel Archibald Gracie and dated 10 April 1912, the day the Titanic set off on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York.

The letter had been expected to reach a price of £60,000 but was finally sold for five times its reserve price to an anonymous buyer at the auction in the UK.

Gracie was one of over 2,000 passengers and crew on the liner, of whom about 1,500 died when the ship sank after hitting an iceberg in the Atlantic.

His account of the disaster, The Truth About the Titanic, is one of the most well-known reports of the tragedy.

Although Gracie survived the disaster his health was affected by the injuries and hypothermia he suffered, and he died in December 1912.
