The MK Party has taken another ward off the ANC in a municipal by-election.

The party won Wednesday’s by-election in Mandeni, north of Durban, with 44% of the vote.

The ANC saw its vote share drop from nearly two-thirds in the 2021 local poll to 27%. The IFP won nearly 30% of the vote, up from about the 13% it won in the 2021 local government election.

The EFF was the only other party to field a candidate on Wednesday, but won only 1% of the vote, a steep drop from the 14% it won in 2021.

This is now the seventh seat the MK Party has won in a by-election and the party will be pleased with the momentum which it is building ahead of the next local government election.
