Executive Director of IRR Legal and Fellow at the Institute of Race Relations (IRR) Gabriel Crouse joined South African Human Rights Commissioner Philile Ntuli and Emeritus Professor at Rhodes University, Professor Fred Hendricks, in a webinar debate today on the notorious Expropriation Act.

The 3pm webinar, Expropriation − The answer to South Africa’s land reform problems?, was hosted by Defend Our Democracy in order to provide “a clear overview of the Expropriation Act of 2024, including its key provisions and differences from the 1975 Act, (set out) factual data on land ownership demographics and the progress of land reform, and address common misconceptions and misinformation surrounding the Act”.

In a statement, the IRR says Crouse “disputes the constitutional validity of the Expropriation Act, and is working with legal experts to strike down the new law’s ‘nil compensation’ provisions, among others, in court. He will make a case against the Act’s weaknesses, and set out key steps that should be taken to protect property from political predation.”

The webinar was initially to have been held on 26 March, but was postponed.
